Penelitian yang dikembangkan dalam roadmap KK SBT berfokus pada: (1) Bio-prospecting, perbaikan tanaman dan produksi biomassa, yaitu dengan melakukan eksplorasi, pemuliaan tanaman dan produksi biomassa tanaman hortikultura/obat/industri/energi, serta metabolit. (2) Rekayasa sistem biologis di tingkat organisme, populasi hingga ekosistem, yaitu untuk meningkatkan pertumbuhan, kualitas, dan reproduksi tanaman. (3) Studi tumbuhan di lingkungan dengan cekaman biotik & abiotik, termasuk fitoremediasinya. (4) Mengembangkan bahan material dan produk tanaman, baik dengan rekayasa maupun biokonversi. Tahap yang dilakukan dalam pengembangan produk dan biomassa adalah dari penelitian dasar yang bersifat bioprospecting (TRL 2-3), kemudian optimalisasi proses (TRL 4-5) dan kemudian produksi skala yang lebih besar (TRL 6-7).
